What is Junetenth?

Juneteenthlou is a platform dedicated to organizing and celebrating Juneteenth in Louisville, KY. Our mission is to provide a space for people to learn about the significance of Juneteenth and participate in events and activities that honor the holiday. Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, commemorates the day on June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas and announced that all enslaved people were to be freed. This came two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, and marked a significant turning point in the fight for freedom and equality.
